EPFO Delays UPI Claim Facility to August Over Portal Glitches

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has postponed the launch of its UPI-linked claim settlement system to August 2026. This delay follows technical issues and member complaints regarding the newly upgraded CITES 2.01 platform. Officials are now prioritizing system stability and data accuracy before introducing the new payment feature.

Detailed Coverage

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has deferred the launch of its UPI-linked claim settlement facility until August 2026. The service, which was designed to allow members to receive funds quickly through the Unified Payments Interface, was initially planned for a earlier release. This change in timeline comes as the organization works to resolve technical difficulties following the recent migration to the CITES 2.01 platform.

Since the implementation of the upgraded centralized IT system, many subscribers have reported significant operational hurdles. Common issues raised by users include the inability to log into their accounts, slow website performance, and instances where historical account data appeared to be missing or incomplete. These disruptions have caused delays in the processing of standard claim requests, leading the EPFO to shift its focus from new feature rollouts to platform stabilization.

Technical teams are currently working to address these software errors, with updates aimed at ensuring system reliability expected by the first week of August. The organization maintains that once the current technical bottlenecks are resolved, it will proceed with the integration of UPI as a secondary, faster payout channel. This system is intended to work alongside the existing National Electronic Funds Transfer method, giving members more flexibility in how they receive their provident fund withdrawals.

This digital transformation project is a major component of the broader reforms initiated in 2025 by the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment. The technology upgrade is being executed in partnership with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, which is building the necessary interfaces to connect EPFO systems with the banking infrastructure provided by the State Bank of India and the National Payments Corporation of India.

The EPFO currently manages a massive corpus of over ₹30 trillion on behalf of approximately 80 million members. Given the scale of these retirement savings, the reliability of the digital platform is critical for millions of employees who rely on timely claim settlements. While the UPI feature aims to modernize the withdrawal process, the primary concern for users in the near term remains the restoration of seamless access to their existing account data and the timely processing of pending claims. Investors and members should track the progress of the portal's stabilization throughout early August to see if the promised improvements in data visibility and processing speeds are achieved.
