DoorDash has received Part 135 certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration to operate commercial drone delivery services. This milestone allows the company to launch pilot programs, marking a shift toward integrating proprietary autonomous technology into its existing logistics network. The initiative aims to enhance delivery efficiency alongside human contractors and sidewalk robots.
DoorDash is moving further into autonomous logistics with the launch of its dedicated drone unit, DoorDash Air. The company has officially obtained Part 135 air carrier certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a regulatory milestone that permits the commercial operation of drones for deliveries within the United States.
While the FAA certification is a significant step, the company has not yet provided a specific timeline for mass adoption. Initial operations will be limited to controlled pilot programs. In these early stages, drone flights will be restricted to short distances where the operator maintains a direct line of sight. To achieve long-range autonomous delivery beyond the operator’s visual range, DoorDash will need to seek additional regulatory permissions. This specific capability has already been reached by industry competitors such as Amazon’s Prime Air, Alphabet’s Wing, and Zipline.
Strategic Technology Integration
The development of DoorDash Air is managed by DoorDash Labs, the same research division that introduced the company’s autonomous sidewalk delivery robot, Dot, in September 2025. Dot is currently undergoing testing in parts of Phoenix and Fremont, California. Rather than replacing human delivery contractors, the company aims to build a flexible delivery network where its software platform dynamically selects the most efficient option—whether it is a human driver, a sidewalk robot, or a drone—based on distance and order characteristics.
This move toward proprietary technology does not end DoorDash's existing partnerships. The company continues to work with third-party drone providers, including Wing, with whom it launched operations in Australia in 2022 and expanded to select U.S. cities like Dallas-Fort Worth in 2024. By maintaining these collaborations while developing its own internal systems, the company is attempting to secure multiple avenues for automated fulfillment.
Challenges in Autonomous Expansion
Investors may note that operating an autonomous delivery fleet involves significant capital investment and regulatory hurdles. Developing the hardware is only one part of the challenge; the company must also manage the costs associated with scaling, maintenance, and the complex software required to coordinate automated delivery modes with human labor. Additionally, the company faces competition from established players who are also navigating the same regulatory and technological landscape. The primary monitorable for investors will be the transition from pilot testing to cost-effective, large-scale commercial deployment, as well as the company’s ability to secure further approvals for long-distance flights that are critical to making autonomous delivery a sustainable part of its business model.
