Canva Launches Proprietary AI 'Canva Craft' Amid Valuation Shift

Design platform Canva has introduced its first in-house generative AI model, 'Canva Craft', to reduce dependence on external tech providers and cut API costs. This strategic shift follows a downward adjustment in the company's valuation to $35 billion and revised growth forecasts. Investors are focusing on whether this move to build proprietary technology can effectively improve operating margins and help the firm compete against giants like Google and OpenAI.

Canva has officially launched its first proprietary image generation model, known as Canva Craft. This development marks a significant transition for the company as it moves toward internal technological self-sufficiency. By relying on its own AI model instead of paying for external services, the firm is working to build a more controlled, efficient design environment. The tool is designed to generate 2K resolution images while allowing users to perform precise text and object editing, bridging the gap between raw AI output and functional, layered design files that are immediately ready for professional use.

The strategic shift is driven by a need to control costs and improve product functionality. Previously, Canva relied heavily on third-party APIs for generative AI features, which created ongoing expenses that could fluctuate based on usage. By using its own library of templates—posters, presentations, and infographics—and integrating technology from Leonardo.ai, which it acquired in 2024, the company expects to optimize its operations. The long-term goal is to integrate this proprietary engine into broader design workflows, potentially allowing other platforms to use its tech through the Model Context Protocol. Future plans include releasing high-speed variants, dubbed Craftfast and Craft-ultrafast, to ensure the tool remains competitive in terms of speed and performance.

This product launch arrives at a sensitive time for the company. While Canva achieved $4 billion in revenue during the previous year, the broader business environment for high-growth tech firms has become more challenging. Market expectations regarding its growth trajectory have been tempered, leading to a reported correction in its private valuation from $42 billion down to $35 billion in 2026. This environment puts pressure on the company to demonstrate that it can achieve sustainable profitability rather than relying on rapid, expensive growth models.

The competitive landscape is also intensifying. Tech giants such as Google, Meta, and OpenAI are moving quickly to embed generative AI into every aspect of creative work. Canva’s success will now depend on whether its proprietary technology can provide a user experience that is genuinely better than what these larger, cash-rich competitors offer. The company’s ability to turn its massive user base into a reliable, high-margin business will be critical.

Investors and market participants will be tracking the actual adoption rates of Canva Craft and whether the company can successfully lower its overall technology-related operating costs. The next important updates will involve the rollout of the faster 'Craftfast' variants and any management commentary regarding how this vertical integration is impacting the company’s bottom line and competitive standing in the design software market.
