Apple iPhone Festive Sales Drop 30% in India

Apple iPhone sales in India fell by 30% during the recent festive period, driven by high price points and fewer promotional offers. Retailers are struggling with excess inventory of older models, while supply shortages for new high-end variants have pushed consumers toward grey-market channels. This slowdown marks a significant shift for the company, which saw record shipments in 2025 and now faces a potential contraction in 2026.

Apple has experienced a challenging start to the festive season in India, with sales of its iPhone series falling by 30% during the Dussehra period compared to previous cycles. This cooling in the premium smartphone segment comes as the company navigates a shift in consumer behavior, moving away from the rapid growth observed in 2025, when the brand shipped a record 14.3 million units in the country.

Several factors have contributed to this decline. Consumers are becoming more cautious with device replacement cycles, which has been exacerbated by the company’s higher pricing strategy and a significant reduction in aggressive festive financing schemes and discounts. While the brand has historically relied on these promotions to drive volume, their absence has made price-sensitive Indian buyers hesitate, leading to a build-up of unsold inventory of older iPhone models at retail outlets.

Adding to the operational complexity is the supply chain management regarding the company’s latest high-end offering, the new iPhone Duo, which carries a premium starting price of Rs 2,99,900. Authorized retailers have reported receiving only a small fraction of their requested stock. This scarcity has inadvertently fueled demand for grey-market imports from regions like Dubai, as buyers seek more immediate availability and often better pricing than what is available on local retail shelves.

Trade bodies, including the All India Mobile Retailers Association, have raised concerns regarding the company's current allocation strategy. Retailers have alleged that distributors are requiring them to purchase older, slower-moving stock as a condition for receiving the high-demand iPhone Duo units. This practice, often referred to as bundling, has put financial pressure on smaller retail outlets that are already struggling to clear existing inventory.

The broader investor implication lies in the transition from the record-breaking performance of 2025 to a projected double-digit contraction in total Indian shipments for 2026. For investors, the key monitorables moving forward include the company’s ability to manage its inventory levels without resorting to deeper price cuts that could impact profit margins, and whether it can stabilize its supply chain to meet consumer demand during the remainder of the festive season. The company's future growth trajectory in India, which serves as both a critical consumption market and an emerging manufacturing hub, will depend on its ability to balance premium pricing with the competitive realities of the Indian retail landscape.
