Anthropic Starts India Rupee Pricing for Claude AI

Anthropic has introduced India-specific pricing for its Claude AI services, allowing users to pay in Indian rupees instead of US dollars. The move aims to simplify payments and reduce exchange fees in its second-largest global market. However, the service does not yet support UPI payments, relying instead on cards and app stores.

Anthropic has officially launched localized subscription pricing for its Claude AI platform in India, marking a strategic effort to better capture one of its fastest-growing user bases. By allowing customers to pay in Indian rupees, the company is removing the friction of foreign exchange conversion fees and the complexity of managing dollar-denominated payments, which previously included additional tax calculations for domestic users.

Impact of Localized Pricing

For Indian subscribers, the shift means that Goods and Services Tax (GST) is now transparently integrated into the listed subscription costs. This update covers several tiers of service, including the popular Claude Pro, alongside newer offerings such as Claude Max and the business-oriented Claude Team plans. Claude Pro is now listed at ₹2,000 per month for annual billing or ₹2,399 for month-to-month plans. The business-focused Claude Team tier starts at ₹2,399 per user per month on an annual plan, offering enterprise features like centralized billing and administrative controls.

Despite the move toward localization, the company has yet to integrate the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which is the most widely used digital payment method in India. For now, payments are limited to credit and debit cards or through the native billing systems of the Apple App Store and Google Play. This lack of UPI support leaves Anthropic playing catch-up with rivals like OpenAI, which integrated UPI for its ChatGPT subscriptions in the Indian market last year.

Competitive Market Dynamics

The AI subscription market in India is becoming increasingly crowded as global technology firms fight for a share of the country's large developer and student population. With Claude Pro priced around ₹2,000 to ₹2,399 monthly, it sits in a similar price bracket to major competitors. For comparison, ChatGPT Plus and Google’s Gemini Advanced subscription services are also priced near the ₹1,950 to ₹2,000 range.

While India has become the second-largest market for Claude globally, contributing nearly 6% of its total usage, turning free users into paying subscribers remains a challenge. The market is known for high price sensitivity, and companies are balancing the need to lower barriers to entry while maintaining profit margins on their compute-intensive AI models. Investors will likely monitor whether the lack of UPI support impacts the speed at which Anthropic can convert its Indian user base into paid subscribers compared to competitors who have already adopted local payment standards.
