Andhra Pradesh has launched an AI-powered flood forecasting platform in Vijayawada to predict urban waterlogging and flash floods. Developed with IIT Gandhinagar, the system provides 48-hour rainfall forecasts and identifies drainage risks, with plans to expand across all urban local bodies in the state.

The Andhra Pradesh government has launched an AI-based City Flood Alert platform to improve disaster management, starting with a pilot project in Vijayawada. Developed by the Real Time Governance Society (RTGS) in partnership with the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) and IIT Gandhinagar, the system uses artificial intelligence to predict potential urban flooding.

Predictive Technology and Data Integration

The platform combines satellite-based terrain mapping with historical hydrological data. By analyzing nearly 30 years of flood patterns from the nearby Budameru stream, the system can simulate how water moves through different terrains under various rainfall intensities. This allows the government to forecast rainfall up to 48 hours in advance and provide flash flood warnings with a six-hour lead time, pinpointing specific flood-prone areas down to the ward level.

Proactive Drainage Management

Beyond just issuing warnings, the technology is designed to help local authorities maintain critical infrastructure. The AI model monitors drainage channels to identify where silt accumulation or blockages may occur. By highlighting these specific points before the monsoon or heavy rainfall events, the system aims to enable targeted cleaning and maintenance, reducing the risk of waterlogging in low-lying residential and commercial areas.

Operational Impact and State-wide Rollout

The system is built to automate the communication process, sending real-time risk assessments directly to the APSDMA. This flow of information is intended to help district collectors and municipal commissioners deploy emergency response teams and coordinate evacuations faster than manual assessment methods allow. Following the pilot in Vijayawada, which has historically faced significant challenges during the rainy season due to its proximity to the Budameru stream, the state government intends to implement digital terrain mapping and flood-risk assessments for all other urban local bodies across Andhra Pradesh.

For investors and market participants, the next phase of this project involves the state-wide expansion plan.
