The Andhra Pradesh government has officially approved a large-scale, 512-megawatt (MW) green integrated artificial intelligence (AI) data center project in the Visakhapatnam district. The project is led by AM Intelligence Labs Pvt Ltd and involves a significant capital investment of ₹31,387 crore. The facility will be developed in Amanam village, situated in the Bheemunipatnam mandal.

To facilitate the project, the state government has extended several incentives. These include non-fiscal support such as guaranteed water supply and dedicated power infrastructure, alongside fiscal benefits like exemptions from stamp duty and electricity duty. These incentives are designed to lower the initial financial barriers for the developer and speed up the construction process.

The project comes with a specific government-mandated timeline, requiring the data center to be operational within two years and four months, or 28 months, from the approval date. This ambitious target suggests that the state is eager to attract digital infrastructure quickly to boost employment, with projections estimating the creation of approximately 1,000 jobs.

Execution and Operational Risks

While the scale of this investment is substantial, large-scale data center projects involve complex execution risks. A 28-month timeline to commission a 512-MW facility is highly aggressive, given the technical requirements for hyperscale data centers. Any delays in construction, permitting, or supply chain procurement could lead to cost overruns, putting pressure on the project's financial viability.

Beyond construction, these facilities face significant operational challenges. A data center of this capacity requires a massive, consistent, and sustainable power supply. While the government has promised infrastructure support, the actual sourcing of reliable green energy—essential for a 'green' data center—remains a critical monitorable. Water management for cooling systems is another logistical hurdle that operators must navigate in large-scale industrial projects.
