Amazon In Talks To Acquire AI Startup Decart For $7 Billion

Amazon is negotiating a $7 billion deal to acquire AI startup Decart, known for its real-time video and robotics simulation technology. The acquisition aims to enhance Amazon’s custom AI chip ecosystem and compete with industry leaders. This development follows a recent failed bid by Anthropic to acquire the same startup.

Amazon is currently in active negotiations to purchase Decart, an AI startup, for approximately $7 billion. This potential acquisition highlights the company's aggressive strategy to bolster its artificial intelligence infrastructure and secure a stronger foothold in the rapidly growing field of generative AI.

Decart has gained attention in the tech industry for two primary innovations: its "Lucy" model, which is used for real-time video editing, and "Oasis," an environment-simulation model. For Amazon, these tools are particularly useful for training and testing autonomous systems, such as robots and drones used in its vast logistics network.

Strategic Push for AI Chips

The core strategic motivation behind this move relates to Amazon's custom AI chip program, specifically its Trainium3 chips. Decart’s software capabilities allow developers to switch more easily between different types of AI chips. By integrating this technology into its ecosystem, Amazon hopes to make its custom hardware more attractive to developers. This is a critical step in providing a functional alternative to the AI hardware currently dominated by companies like Nvidia.

Valuation and Market Context

The $7 billion price tag represents a significant jump in valuation for the Israeli-founded, San Francisco-based startup. As recently as May 2026, Decart was valued at roughly $4 billion during a funding round that included support from Radical Ventures and Nvidia. The rapid increase in value reflects both the high demand for specialized AI infrastructure and the maturity of Decart’s simulation models.

The path to this deal has been competitive. Reports indicate that Anthropic, another major player in the AI space, conducted due diligence for a potential $6 billion acquisition of Decart. However, Anthropic decided to walk away from those negotiations in September 2026.

Risks and Execution Challenges

While the acquisition could offer a business advantage, it involves notable risks. The most immediate uncertainty is the negotiation process itself; deals of this size can often fall through if the final terms are not met, a scenario observed previously with other interested parties.

Additionally, integrating a specialized software stack into a massive, large-scale cloud infrastructure like Amazon Web Services (AWS) is complex and carries the risk of project delays or cost increases. Amazon will also need to ensure that such a large capital outlay produces clear returns, particularly as the AI hardware market remains highly volatile and competitive. Investors will be monitoring the next steps, including any formal announcement regarding the deal's completion, the integration timeline for Decart’s models, and how these tools eventually translate into performance improvements for AWS customers.
