Alphabet Unit Waymo Launches Custom Robotaxi Chip

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has unveiled a new custom 5nm computer chip to power its sixth-generation Ojai robotaxis. This move aims to improve operational efficiency and lower costs as the company scales its autonomous ride-hailing services. While the technology promises performance gains, investors should monitor the high capital spending and regulatory risks associated with scaling driverless operations.

Waymo has introduced a new custom-built 5nm application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chip, marking a significant step in the company's hardware strategy. This new silicon is designed to process the vast amounts of data captured by the sensors on the company’s sixth-generation Ojai robotaxis. With over 1,000 TOPS of computing power, the chip helps the vehicle’s systems manage real-time input from 13 cameras, four lidars, and various radar feeds, ensuring safer navigation in complex urban environments.

For investors in Alphabet, the parent company of Waymo, this development signals a push toward vertical integration. By designing its own chips, the company aims to optimize processing power while potentially managing hardware costs as it expands its footprint in cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. While the chips are manufactured by TSMC, Waymo continues to maintain its existing partnerships with major chipmakers like Nvidia and AMD, indicating a hybrid approach to hardware procurement.

Despite the technological advancements, the robotaxi business remains a capital-intensive venture. Scaling an autonomous fleet requires continuous, significant investment in research, vehicle hardware, and infrastructure. Because Waymo is a subsidiary of Alphabet and not a standalone public company, these costs are reflected in the financial performance of Alphabet’s 'Other Bets' segment.
