Adobe Names Anil Chakravarthy CEO From Dec 1; Stock Dips

Adobe has announced that Anil Chakravarthy will take over as CEO on December 1, 2026, replacing long-time leader Shantanu Narayen, who will become executive chair. The company’s stock fell by 1-2% in after-hours trading as investors weighed the leadership transition against recent market headwinds and a pending permanent CFO appointment.

Adobe has officially named Anil Chakravarthy as its next Chief Executive Officer, effective December 1, 2026. Chakravarthy, who currently leads Adobe's Customer Experience Orchestration business and worldwide field operations, will take over from Shantanu Narayen. Narayen, who has served as CEO for 18 years, will transition to the role of executive chair to assist with the leadership handover.

The announcement triggered a muted reaction in the markets, with Adobe shares dropping approximately 1-2% in after-hours trading. This caution reflects investor uncertainty during a significant period of change for the software company, which has seen its stock price face volatility throughout 2026 amid concerns over AI-driven competition.

Beyond the CEO change, the company is dealing with a leadership gap in its finance department. The CFO position has been held by interim executive Steve Day since the departure of former finance chief Dan Durn earlier in June 2026. For shareholders, the absence of a permanent finance head, combined with the upcoming change in the CEO role, creates a period of transition that the market is watching closely.

Chakravarthy’s appointment comes at a critical time for Adobe’s business model. The company is actively working to integrate generative AI tools across its software suite to defend its position against new market entrants and competitors. The primary challenge for the incoming leadership will be proving that the company can maintain its growth while navigating these competitive threats and the shift in how creative professionals use software.

The most important monitorable for investors in the coming days is the company's third-quarter financial results, which are scheduled for release on September 10, 2026. Investors will likely look to this report for guidance on the company’s future strategy and an update on the progress of its management transition.
