AdaniConneX Shifts to Air-Cooling for Vizag Data Centers

AdaniConneX is implementing air-cooling technology at its 1-gigawatt data center project in Visakhapatnam to reduce freshwater dependency. This move addresses local water scarcity concerns near the Mudasarlova Reservoir and Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary. By eliminating water-intensive cooling, the company aims to ensure sustainable operations amid growing demand for AI and cloud infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh.

AdaniConneX, the joint venture between Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX, is adopting air-cooling systems for its 1-gigawatt data center development in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The company is pivoting away from traditional water-intensive evaporative cooling towers to mitigate environmental impact, specifically addressing local concerns regarding water consumption near the Mudasarlova Reservoir and the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary.

Data centers are significant consumers of both electricity and water. As India scales its digital infrastructure, balancing rapid capacity expansion with local environmental impact is critical for securing and maintaining regulatory and social clearance. For investors, this shift highlights the importance of the company maintaining its social license to operate—the community and regulatory support required for large-scale infrastructure projects. If a company fails to address local concerns, such as water scarcity, it risks project delays, public opposition, and regulatory hurdles that can impact project timelines.

The project, which spans multiple sites including Mudasarlova and Tarluvada, includes a zero-discharge policy where domestic wastewater is processed through on-site treatment plants and repurposed. The company reports that the vast majority of its freshwater intake will be allocated to staff facilities rather than server cooling, with the hardware itself relying on air-based technology. This technical pivot is designed to allow the developer to use specialized industrial water connections, effectively bypassing municipal residential lines that are a primary source of grievance for local residents.

This deployment aligns with the broader strategy of Andhra Pradesh to emerge as a hub for AI and cloud computing. Adani Enterprises continues to use the AdaniConneX platform to build a national network of hyperscale data centers, betting on India's long-term digital growth.

From a financial and operational standpoint, investors may want to track how the cost of implementing air-cooling—which typically requires higher initial capital spending than traditional evaporative cooling—affects the long-term margin profile of the project. Additionally, the project's ability to remain on schedule while navigating environmental compliance remains a key monitorable. Any sign of regulatory friction or community pushback could delay commissioning, impacting the expected revenue timeline for the company's digital infrastructure segment.
