Adalat AI, an Indian non-profit organization focused on using technology to improve the justice system, has been selected for the Y Combinator F26 batch. This is a rare development for the accelerator, marking the first time a non-profit has been selected in nearly five years, and the first Indian-founded non-profit in its history to join the program. Founded by Utkarsh Saxena and Arghya Bhattacharya, the organization provides AI-powered software to courts at no cost, aiming to solve operational inefficiencies rather than legislative ones.
Scaling Judicial Technology
The organization’s platform is designed to tackle the massive backlog of cases in India by automating manual tasks. Its suite of tools includes automatic speech recognition, which supports over 15 Indian languages, and digital case management software that simplifies document flow. These tools are currently active in more than 6,000 courtrooms across 11 states. Notably, the state of Sikkim has fully digitized its judiciary using these systems, and Kerala has implemented the platform statewide. The organization is also preparing for a statewide rollout in Andhra Pradesh this October.
By joining the Y Combinator program, which runs from September to December, the founders aim to refine their scaling strategy. The goal is to move beyond current implementations and expand the software’s presence to more regions within India, and potentially to other nations in the Global South that face similar challenges with judicial delays and outdated infrastructure.
Operational Challenges and Risks
While the adoption of AI in the public sector offers potential for efficiency, the non-profit model faces distinct hurdles. Because it does not operate as a traditional for-profit entity, Adalat AI relies on grants and philanthropic funding to sustain operations and provide free software to courts. This creates a long-term dependency on consistent external funding rather than revenue generation.
Furthermore, the organization must navigate significant physical and regulatory risks. India’s diverse geographical landscape means that the platform must function reliably in areas with limited internet connectivity and aging hardware. There is also the critical issue of data sovereignty; as the system manages sensitive judicial records, the organization must ensure strict compliance with data protection laws. Additionally, the widespread adoption of such technology depends heavily on government policy and the willingness of local judicial bodies to transition away from traditional, paper-based workflows. The success of this initiative will largely depend on the organization’s ability to maintain high security standards while ensuring the technology remains accessible in resource-constrained environments.
