ASML Shares Fall 6% as Tech Giants Commit to High NA Tools

ASML has secured production commitments for its advanced High NA lithography machines from major chipmakers like TSMC, Samsung, and SK Hynix. Despite this long-term technological progress, the stock dropped over 6% on September 14, 2026, amid a wider sell-off in AI-related equities. Investors are now weighing the company's strong order visibility against the high cost of this new equipment and broader sector valuation concerns.

ASML is cementing its role as the backbone of advanced AI chip production, even as its stock price faces pressure. Major semiconductor manufacturers, including TSMC, Samsung, and SK Hynix, have now set clear timelines to adopt ASML’s next-generation High Numerical Aperture (High NA) lithography machines. This shift signals that the industry is moving from experimental phases into actual production planning for the next decade of chipmaking.

TSMC and Industry Adoption Timelines

TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, has committed to integrating High NA technology into its high-volume manufacturing processes starting in 2030. This is a critical development, as TSMC had previously been cautious about the productivity gains of these expensive systems. Additionally, Samsung and SK Hynix have targeted 2028 for introducing High NA tools into their memory production lines. Intel, which was the first to adopt the technology, reports that it has already processed over one million wafers using these systems, confirming their reliability in real-world settings.

ASML and TSMC have also initiated a joint project to transition the industry toward 12-inch photomask technology by 2031, an effort aimed at boosting long-term manufacturing efficiency. Despite these milestones, ASML shares declined more than 6% on September 14, 2026, influenced by a broader market sell-off in AI-linked stocks and investor caution regarding the speed of future AI model advancements.

Financial Position and Capital Costs

ASML continues to report strong underlying financials, with the company recording €9.3 billion in net sales and a 54% gross margin in its second quarter of 2026. Its standard extreme ultraviolet machines are largely sold out through 2027, providing a stable revenue base.

However, the move to High NA brings specific financial and operational challenges. These new machines cost approximately $400 million each, roughly double the price of previous models. For customers, the primary risk is whether the productivity gains—such as the ability to print features 40% smaller—will translate into high enough returns to justify this massive capital spending.

Investors are also tracking the cyclical nature of semiconductor spending, which can cause volatility in orders. Furthermore, geopolitical factors, including export licensing outcomes and trade restrictions, remain a persistent risk for ASML’s global operations. The key monitorable for shareholders will be how these customers balance the high cost of new equipment against the need for advanced AI chips, and whether ASML can maintain its historical margins as the industry transitions to this more expensive technology.
