AI Travel Tools Need Balancing to Prevent 'Filter Bubbles'

While AI travel planners offer quick, personalized itineraries, experts warn of the 'filter bubble' effect which limits discovery. Balancing past preferences with new experiences remains a key challenge for travel tech firms like EaseMyTrip and Agoda.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how Indians plan holidays, turning hours of research into seconds of automated output. By analyzing past travel history and preferences, these systems suggest destinations, hotels, and activities. However, a growing concern among tech experts and industry leaders is the risk of a 'filter bubble,' where AI might limit holiday options by only recommending what a user has liked before.

The Challenge of Algorithmic Narrowing

In computer science, algorithms often focus on 'exploitation'—using past data to provide the most likely desired result. While this increases accuracy, it can inadvertently trap users in a loop of predictable, repetitive travel choices. To solve this, developers often use 'exploration' strategies, which intentionally inject a level of randomness into recommendations. This helps platforms suggest novel or unexpected experiences that a user might not have sought out otherwise.

Industry Perspective on Personalization

For travel companies, the goal is to make planning easier without stripping away the joy of discovery. Rikant Pittie, CEO and Co-founder of EaseMyTrip, noted that personalization must broaden rather than restrict choices. He stressed that AI should act as a bridge between familiarity and inspiration by introducing users to emerging experiences and seasonal destinations that fall outside their typical search patterns.

According to Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report, approximately 68% of Indian travelers are projected to use AI for travel planning. Ahmer Khan, Senior Director of Marketing at Agoda, explained that while efficiency and price comparisons remain top priorities for users, platforms must ensure these tools do not become too narrow. The value of AI lies in reducing the friction of planning, but it must leave room for the excitement that comes with exploring new places.

Practical Steps for Travelers

Travelers can actively manage these AI tools to avoid falling into an echo chamber. Rather than relying solely on default settings, users can provide specific prompts to force the AI to break its own patterns. This includes requesting a certain percentage of local or offbeat activities, or asking for adjustments based on real-time factors like weather changes rather than static historical profiles. By deliberately asking for experiences outside their comfort zone, users can ensure their AI-assisted travel plans remain diverse and adventurous. The key monitorable for the industry will be how effectively platforms integrate these 'serendipity' features into their user interfaces to keep travelers engaged while providing high-quality, relevant results.
