4G Smartphone Shipments See Surprise Growth in India

High component and memory costs are slowing the push for 5G, leading to a 3% expected growth in 4G smartphone shipments in 2026. Major brands are now prioritizing value-focused 4G models as consumer affordability remains a key challenge.

The rapid push toward 5G in India is facing a significant hurdle, with rising component and memory costs forcing a rethink in product strategy. Instead of a complete migration to 5G, the Indian mobile market is witnessing a surprising comeback for 4G smartphones. Data indicates that 4G smartphone shipments are projected to grow by 3% in 2026, marking a shift from the previous year's decline. The share of 4G devices in total shipments is expected to rise from 11% in 2025 to 13% in 2026, with forecasts suggesting it could climb further to 15% by 2027.

The Shift in Consumer and OEM Strategy

Manufacturers are struggling to deliver a competitive 5G experience within the budget-conscious sub-₹15,000 price bracket. To keep devices affordable, brands are sacrificing the 5G chip in favor of better hardware features like superior displays, battery life, and storage. This strategy has resulted in a significant change in the product landscape. In the ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 price segment, the number of manufacturers offering 4G-only models has jumped from just two in 2025 to 12 in 2026. Key players like Lava International, Xiaomi, Infinix, and Realme are actively adjusting their roadmaps to include more high-spec 4G devices, positioning them as a long-term value choice for consumers rather than a temporary stopgap.

Risks and Financial Challenges

While this pivot helps address immediate consumer demand, it brings its own set of business risks. Persistent inflation in component and memory costs threatens to squeeze profit margins, making it difficult for manufacturers to balance quality with affordability. This high-competition environment requires companies to maintain aggressive investment in marketing and research, which can place a strain on financial resources.

For established players like Lava International, these sector-wide pressures add to a complex operating environment. The company has navigated historical challenges, including instances of non-compliance with the Companies Act and issues related to share allotment records. Furthermore, financial reports have highlighted periods of negative cash flows across operating, investing, and financing activities. Such factors, combined with exposure to foreign currency exchange risks, can impact a company’s financial flexibility and its ability to fund future expansion in a capital-intensive sector.

What Investors Should Monitor

The long-term success of this 4G resurgence will depend heavily on global component pricing and consumer appetite for 5G services. If 5G data consumption slows down due to the continued preference for 4G, telecom operators may also face pressure on their service revenues. Moving forward, investors and industry watchers will focus on whether manufacturers can maintain healthy profit margins amidst high costs and whether the demand for 4G remains sustainable or if it is merely a reaction to current market affordability issues.
