Michael Burry, the investor famously known for predicting the 2008 US mortgage crisis, has disclosed bearish investment strategies, specifically purchasing put options on leading technology companies Nvidia Corp. and Palantir Technologies. Nvidia, currently the world's most valued company, and Palantir, noted as the most expensive stock on the S&P 500 index, experienced immediate stock price declines following the announcement of Burry's disclosures. Nvidia's shares fell by 4%, while Palantir saw a drop of over 8%, this occurred even as Palantir announced an upward revision of its full-year earnings guidance and exceeded analyst expectations for the current quarter. Nvidia's market capitalization recently surpassed $5 trillion, fueled by the ongoing artificial intelligence boom. Palantir, having surged 175% year-to-date, is trading at a premium valuation, exceeding 80 times its one-year forward price-to-sales ratio. Burry had also recently voiced concerns about a potential bubble forming in the technology sector via social media posts. This marks a repeat of Burry's strategy against Nvidia, as his firm had previously liquidated most of its equity holdings to acquire put options on the chipmaker and other US-listed Chinese technology firms.
Impact: This news can significantly influence investor sentiment towards highly valued technology stocks, potentially triggering broader market corrections if other investors adopt similar strategies. It underscores the inherent risks associated with exceptionally high stock valuations in the current economic climate. For Nvidia and Palantir, the disclosures add short-term pressure and increase market scrutiny.
