▶

Short Description :

A Lumikai report indicates India's digital users are shifting from passive viewing to active engagement across gaming, social, video, and audio platforms. The young, tech-savvy audience, largely from non-metro areas, actively uses UPI for payments and increasingly pays for content. Gaming is the top activity, followed by short videos and social apps, with monetization evolving towards subscriptions and micro-transactions.

Detailed Coverage :

Lumikai's 'Swipe Before Type 2025' report, surveying 3,000 mobile users, highlights a significant transformation in India's digital entertainment landscape. Consumers are actively participating in gaming, social media, video, and audio platforms, moving beyond passive consumption. Key findings reveal a young, experimental audience that is increasingly willing to pay. Over 80% consume more than 1 GB of data daily, two-thirds are from non-metro areas, and women form over 46% of interactive media users. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) dominates transactions, used by 80% of respondents.

Gaming has emerged as the leading digital activity, capturing 49% of attention share and surpassing OTT, short video, and music. Women constitute 45% of gamers, with 60% residing in non-metro locations. Users engage with multiple games weekly, and about one-third make in-app purchases for upgrades, with UPI facilitating 80% of these. Monetization strategies are expanding to include subscriptions, virtual gifting, and recurring micro-transactions.

Video consumption, primarily short-form content on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, averages six hours weekly, with microdramas gaining traction. Over 54% of video consumers pay for content, often via monthly subscriptions. Social and community platforms are used for around 10 hours weekly, with spending driven by virtual gifting and creator subscriptions.

AI adoption is growing, especially in metros, though a slight majority still prefer human interaction. Monetization is consolidating around subscriptions and gaming, with a substantial portion of digital wallet share allocated to games and premium subscriptions.

Impact: This evolving digital economy presents significant opportunities for companies in the gaming, content creation, social media, and digital payment sectors. The trend towards paid content and diverse monetization models suggests strong revenue growth potential. Regulatory shifts in real-money gaming may spur innovation in other gaming segments.
