Short Description :

Ecommerce giant Amazon has laid off approximately 1,000 employees in India over the past week as part of a global restructuring. This exercise, expected to impact up to 2,000 employees, targets mid-senior and senior roles across its Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru offices, affecting verticals like Prime Video, AWS, and retail. Employees are being offered severance pay, extended notice periods, and job placement support. Amazon cites the need to reduce bureaucracy and shift resources towards artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives as the primary reason for these job cuts.

Detailed Coverage :

Amazon India has initiated a significant restructuring, resulting in the layoff of around 1,000 employees in the last week, with potential to reach up to 2,000. This workforce reduction is part of Amazon's broader global restructuring efforts and is primarily impacting mid-senior and senior level employees, specifically those in levels L3 to L7, which range from entry-level support to management positions.

The layoffs are concentrated in Amazon's offices in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, with departments such as Prime Video, People Experience and Tech/Human Resources, Q&A devices, retail stores, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) being the most affected. In some instances, entire teams, like the Retail Business Services (RBS) division with over 20 employees, have been dissolved.

Impacted employees are receiving support, including two months' salary and a two-month period to seek internal roles. For positions L4 and above, Amazon is also providing external job placement assistance.

Amazon stated that this restructuring is aimed at streamlining operations by reducing bureaucracy and layers, allowing resources to be redirected towards its "biggest bets," particularly artificial intelligence (AI). Beth Galetti, Amazon's Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, emphasized AI as the most transformative technology since the Internet, driving faster innovation. Amazon is making substantial investments in AI, including an $8 billion stake in Anthropic and developing in-house large language models (LLMs). This move mirrors similar actions by other tech giants like Microsoft, which also cut jobs, and Indian startups attributing layoffs to AI adoption and automation.

Impact This news significantly impacts the Indian tech job market, influencing employee sentiment and the broader employment landscape. It signals a shift in the industry towards AI and automation, affecting Amazon's operational strategy and growth within India. Rating: 8/10
