Vision for the Intelligence Age

Rakesh Bharti Mittal, Vice Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, unveiled plans for a massive ₹1.35 lakh crore ($15 billion) AI data centre in Visakhapatnam, positioning it as a critical step in India's digital evolution. Mittal declared the project will transform Visakhapatnam, historically a maritime gateway, into the nation's "Gateway to Intelligence." This initiative marks a significant shift from focusing solely on connectivity to building intelligence-led infrastructure for the global AI economy.

Infrastructure and Partnerships

The 1-gigawatt (GW) hyperscale project involves strategic collaborations with tech giant Google and infrastructure leader Adani Group. Mittal emphasized the region's strong existing digital backbone, citing nearly 12,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable already in place. This extensive network, coupled with planned integrations of subsea cable landing stations and international connectivity, is designed to elevate Visakhapatnam into a high-capacity data hub and enhance India's role in global data flows.

Operational Execution and Sustainability

Nxtra by Airtel, the data centre arm of Bharti Airtel, will spearhead the operational execution, building upon its existing portfolio of over 120 facilities. Mittal signaled aggressive timelines for project delivery, stating, "This is just the beginning... our work starts now." A key aspect of the project's design is sustainability, with approximately 400 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy earmarked to power the infrastructure. This commitment aligns with India's broader net-zero emission goals, ensuring the facility is eco-friendly and self-sustainable.

AI's Economic Imperative

Mittal highlighted AI's transformative power, calling it a technology that "digitizes cognition itself." He projected its far-reaching impact on productivity, efficiency, and personalized services across industries. The strategic placement of India at the heart of this AI revolution was a central theme, highlighting the nation's indispensable role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence. Strong support from the Andhra Pradesh government is expected to attract sustained investment and commercial activity, solidifying India's position in the global AI economy.
