Pine Labs IPO: VC Jackpot! Billions Pocketed, But Some Investors Face Losses

Peak XV Partners, through its investment vehicle, has offloaded over 2.3 crore shares of fintech firm Pine Labs as part of its IPO's Offer for Sale (OFS) component, realizing INR 508 crore. This marks a substantial 39.5 times return on their initial investment. Another vehicle from Peak XV Partners is expected to generate an additional INR 6 crore with a 1.4X return.

Several other early investors are also trimming their stakes. Actis is set to gain around INR 195 crore (3.1X return), and Temasek expects INR 193 crore (2.9X return). Madison India anticipates a nearly 5.6X return. Conversely, Lightspeed and BlackRock, which invested at higher valuations, are facing losses or minimal returns. Lightspeed's entities are selling below their acquisition cost, while BlackRock's funds are yielding only a 1.2X return, barely breaking even.

In total, approximately 30 investment funds and institutional shareholders are participating in the OFS. Pine Labs had previously raised INR 1,753.8 Cr from 71 anchor investors, including SBI and Nomura India, at the upper price band of INR 221 per share. The IPO itself comprises a fresh issue of up to INR 2,080 Cr and an OFS of up to 8.23 crore shares, valuing the company at INR 25,377 Cr. The fresh capital will be used for debt repayment, overseas subsidiary investment, and technology infrastructure enhancement.
