Muse Wearables, a startup supported by IIT-Madras, has joined forces with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to unveil Ring One. This innovative smart ring allows users to make instant and secure payments simply by tapping it on any NFC-enabled Point of Sale (POS) terminal.
The technology behind Ring One is Muse Wallet, a proprietary payment platform developed in collaboration with NPCI and RuPay. Muse Wallet enables tokenized, hardware-level transactions, ensuring high security through a secure element embedded directly within the Ring One. This approach meets global payment security standards and aims to provide a truly sovereign digital wallet option for India, competing with foreign technology giants.
Muse Wallet can convert any RuPay credit or debit card into a secure digital token. This token is stored in a tamper-resistant Secure Element (SE) chip, similar to those used in bank cards and passports, providing robust protection for sensitive financial information by isolating it from the phone's operating system.
The platform is already operational in over 40 countries and supports cards from nearly 600 banks. Muse Wearables plans to enable millions of RuPay cardholders to experience the convenience of wearable payments within the next two years.
Impact:
This launch has the potential to significantly boost the adoption of contactless payments in India, offering a more convenient and secure alternative to cards and mobile wallets. It could lead to increased competition in the fintech sector, push innovation in wearable payment technology, and strengthen India's position in digital payment solutions by offering a sovereign alternative.
