Modi: India Must Lead Global AI Race, Build Tech Locally
Overview

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on Indian startups to develop indigenous artificial intelligence (AI) solutions using local talent and on Indian servers. Speaking on National Startup Day, he stressed a shift from partnership to global leadership, a strong manufacturing push, and creating world-class products to secure India's economic and strategic interests. The initiative aims to empower startups with advanced technology and foster nationwide innovation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged Indian startups to focus on building indigenous artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, emphasizing the critical need for development by Indian talent and deployment on Indian servers. The directive came during his address on National Startup Day, which also marked a decade of the government's Startup India initiative.

Modi called for startups to double down on manufacturing and create global-standard products domestically. He articulated an ambition for India to achieve global leadership in emerging technology trends, moving beyond mere partnerships. "As we are moving ahead, our ambition should not be of partnership, but we should aim for global leadership," he stated.

Tech Sovereignty Push

The Prime Minister highlighted AI as a key domain for securing India's economic security and strategic autonomy. He noted that countries leading the AI race possess significant advantages. The IndiaAI Mission is reportedly integrating over 38,000 GPUs, with efforts underway to make advanced technology accessible to smaller startups.

Startup Ecosystem Growth

Over the past ten years, the Startup India mission has transformed the nation's entrepreneurial landscape. India has grown from under 500 startups to more than 200,000 recognized entities, boasting 125 active unicorns. Modi also recognized the substantial role of women, with over 45% of recognized startups having at least one woman director, positioning India as the second-largest ecosystem for women-led startups. The initiative has also encouraged entrepreneurship in tier-2, tier-3 cities, and rural areas.

Government Support Mechanisms

The government has established an ecosystem encouraging innovation through programs like Atal Tinkering Labs and hackathons. Legislative changes, such as the Jan Vishwas Act, have decriminalized over 180 provisions, simplifying compliances and reducing litigation time for businesses. Facilitating self-certification, mergers, and exits has further streamlined operations.
