Meta Platforms Inc. is doubling down on its pursuit of humanoid technology with the acquisition of Assured Robot Intelligence. The deal injects specialized AI expertise into Meta's growing robotics division.
Strategic Expansion in Robotics
The acquisition brings Assured Robot Intelligence's team, including co-founders Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang, into Meta's Superintelligence Labs. This unit focuses on pioneering advanced robotics research, working alongside Meta Robotics Studio, which was established last year to develop foundational humanoid technologies. The acquired startup's specialty lies in AI models designed to help robots understand, anticipate, and react to human behaviors in varied settings.
Competition Heats Up
Meta faces a competitive landscape in developing advanced humanoid robots. Companies like Tesla Inc., Alphabet Inc.'s Google, and Amazon.com Inc. are also investing heavily in this area. This sector aims to create robots capable of human-like movement and physical task assistance, marking a significant frontier in artificial intelligence and automation. Notably, Pinto previously co-founded Fauna Robotics, which Amazon acquired in March to enhance its own humanoid efforts.

The integration of Assured Robot Intelligence's expertise is expected to boost Meta's capabilities in AI models for whole-body humanoid control and self-learning. Meta's long-term vision involves establishing a foundational platform for humanoid technology, similar to how Google's Android and Qualcomm's chips shaped the smartphone industry.
