Maharashtra Targets AI Growth
Maharashtra is making a major push into Artificial Intelligence with its newly approved AI Policy 2026. The state aims to attract over ₹10,000 crore in investment and create 150,000 new jobs by 2031. This policy is designed to establish Maharashtra as a key center for AI innovation nationwide.
Key Policy Pillars Defined
The policy focuses on seven main areas: developing AI infrastructure, improving local language data capabilities, extensive workforce training, helping small and medium businesses (MSMEs) adopt AI, nurturing startups, setting up sectoral Centres of Excellence, and ensuring ethical AI governance. A significant part of the infrastructure plan involves a shared computing system offering at least 2,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) for use as a 'compute-as-a-service'.
Support for Businesses and Workforce
To encourage wider use of AI, the policy will offer financial support to 5,000 MSMEs. A dedicated ₹500 crore AI startup fund, with ₹250 crore from the state, will be created. This fund, alongside 12 AI incubators providing up to ₹1 crore per startup, aims to help new companies grow. Additional support will be available for businesses led by women. The state also plans to train 200,000 professionals in AI technologies, building a skilled workforce for the future.
Ethical AI and Governance
Beyond economic goals, Maharashtra is prioritizing responsible AI development. The policy outlines a governance framework for ethical AI use. It also proposes annual audits to check readiness for AI deployment across government departments, ensuring AI aligns with societal values and provides necessary safeguards.
Driving Economic Growth
This comprehensive policy is set to enhance Maharashtra's technological capabilities and significantly boost its economic output. By fostering an environment for investment, innovation, and talent development, the state is positioning itself for strong growth in the AI-driven economy.
