India's data center industry is set for unprecedented expansion, with total capacity expected to quintuple from 1.7 GW to 8 GW by 2030. This ambitious growth requires a colossal capital expenditure (capex) of approximately $30 billion. The primary catalysts for this boom are the accelerating adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), surging data consumption from digital services like e-commerce and OTT, rapid cloud adoption, and stringent data localization regulations.
The rise of large language models (LLMs) and generative AI is particularly significant, as these advanced AI workloads demand substantially more computing power, three to five times that of standard workloads. Consequently, AI is projected to account for 35% of data center capacity by 2027, up from the current 15%. India's specialized AI data center capacity is anticipated to grow by 80% between 2024 and 2027.
Leading this expansion are major Indian conglomerates: Reliance Industries, Adani Enterprises, and Bharti Airtel are expected to collectively contribute 35-40% of the total data center capacity by 2030. This massive investment is forecast to transform the market, with leasing revenues potentially soaring from the current $1.7 billion to $8 billion by 2030.
Government mandates, including the DPDP Act, SEBI's requirements for regulated entities, and the RBI's directive for local storage of payments data, are also crucial drivers, compelling companies to build and utilize domestic data centers for sensitive information, especially from the BFSI sector.
