Drone Delivery Takes Flight in Bengaluru
FedEx and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have completed India's first intra-city drone delivery flight trials in Bengaluru. The tests focused on improving urban logistics and exploring aerial transport for mid-mile operations.
Drone Cuts 53km Delivery Time to Just 21 Minutes
Tests by the FedEx SMART Centre at IIT Madras showed a dramatic speed increase. A 53-kilometer road journey, usually taking over 60 minutes, was covered by a drone in just 21 minutes. The aerial route measured 39–42 kilometers. This efficiency gain tackles a major challenge in urban delivery networks.
Regulatory Hurdles Cleared for Drone Flights
Successfully operating the drones involved navigating sensitive airspace. The flights, which required approvals from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), took place within Airport Yellow and Red Zones. This shows a commitment to developing safe and scalable logistics solutions within regulatory guidelines, supporting FedEx's innovation goals.
Future Logistics Research Gets a Boost
Nitin Navneet Tatiwala, FedEx VP for MEISA marketing, customer experience, and air network, stated the achievement supports the FedEx SMART Centre's research. This research includes optimizing air cargo, integrating electric vehicles, and improving demand forecasting. Professor Satyanarayanan R Chakravarthy added that the trials integrate aerial robotics into urban logistics, turning research into practical applications. Professor Arshinder Kaur noted the tests highlight the centre's focus on supply chain innovation and advanced technology.
