FIIs Remain Net Short on India Amid AI Lag
Mihir Vora, Chief Investment Officer at Trust Mutual Fund, which manages assets of ₹3,933.98 crore, has highlighted the persistent net short positions held by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) in Indian markets. This cautious stance stems from India’s failure to capitalize on the global artificial intelligence (AI) investment cycle, unlike its Asian peers.
Currency Headwinds and Sectoral Gaps
Vora noted that currency weakness further erodes investor confidence, compounded by the absence of a clear sectoral growth trigger. He suggested that a potential trade deal could act as a significant catalyst to boost sentiment.
IT Sector Divergence
The outlook for the IT sector is mixed. Vora expressed an underweight stance on large-cap IT stocks, citing their stagnant single-digit growth and lack of business model evolution. Instead, he favors specific mid-cap and small-cap IT companies that demonstrate a strong 'hunger for growth' and consistent performance, even if pursuing inorganic expansion.
Tactical Commodity Plays
While structurally wary of commodities, Trust Mutual Fund tactically plays non-ferrous metals like aluminum and copper, driven by energy demands and AI/EV linkages. These are accessed directly or indirectly through exchanges and gold financing companies. Steel is viewed as a less compelling structural story.
