Elon Musk's Tesla, xAI Create AI to Act Like Software Firms
Overview

Elon Musk has revealed "Macrohard," a new venture by Tesla and his AI startup xAI. The project unites xAI's Grok AI with Tesla's AI agent to mimic the operations of entire software companies. Announced on X, this move signals a significant push into agentic AI that could alter business models.

How Macrohard Works

At its core, Macrohard integrates xAI's Grok large language model, described as a "navigator," with an AI agent developed by Tesla. This agent can process real-time computer screen visuals and handle keyboard and mouse inputs, enabling it to perform tasks autonomously. Musk indicated the system will use Tesla's in-house AI4 chip with xAI's Nvidia-based server hardware, aiming for a cost-effective solution.

Market Context and Investment

The announcement follows the recent launch of Anthropic's Claude Cowork, which also showcased autonomous capabilities. The name "Macrohard" is a pointed reference, as xAI was reportedly developing the project to simulate software functions from major firms like Microsoft. This development follows Tesla's January commitment to invest approximately $2 billion in xAI shares. Earlier, SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock transaction, valuing the rocket maker at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion, ahead of a potential SpaceX IPO.
