Clio Surpasses $500 Million ARR Milestone as AI Powers Legal Tech Growth
Clio, the Canadian legal practice management software company, announced it has surpassed $500 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). This milestone represents a significant acceleration, as the company doubled its ARR from late last year and more than doubled the $200 million ARR reported in mid-2024. Clio attributes this rapid revenue growth to its strategic integration of artificial intelligence into its offerings in 2023.
Why LLMs Excel in the Legal Field
Clio CEO Jack Newton explained why Large Language Models (LLMs) are well-suited for legal tasks, comparing their potential to success in coding. "LLMs are so excellent for coding because all the existing code in the world is a huge repository to train on," Newton said. He noted that law firms have extensive archives of contracts and agreements, offering large text datasets that AI models can learn from. Both tech companies and legal professionals are increasingly recognizing this potential.
AI Drives Momentum Across Legal Tech Competitors
Clio is not the only company seeing an AI-driven revenue surge. Harvey, another legal AI software provider, reported reaching $190 million in ARR by the end of 2025. Legora announced last month it achieved $100 million in ARR just 18 months after launching its platform. This booming market has also attracted AI giant Anthropic, which recently added legal-specific features to its Claude assistant, expanding its "Claude for Legal" offering. This move places Anthropic in competition with its partners, as both Harvey and Legora use Claude as a core model.
Strategic Moves Bolster Clio's AI Leadership
Investors have taken note of Clio's impressive growth. The company was valued at $5 billion when it secured $500 million in Series G funding last November. Beyond its core tools for time-tracking, invoicing, and payments, Clio strengthened its AI research capabilities by acquiring the data intelligence platform vLex for $1 billion last year. These strategic moves reinforce Clio's leadership in AI-powered legal technology.
