AI Chip Investment Boosts EdgeCortix

CG Power and Industrial Solutions' wholly-owned subsidiary, Axiro Semiconductor, has invested in EdgeCortix, a Japanese company that designs AI chips. Axiro co-invested with Japan's MPower Partners. EdgeCortix specializes in energy-efficient AI processing for devices at the "edge" – meaning outside of large data centers. The funding will help EdgeCortix speed up the launch of its new AI platforms for Generative and Agentic AI, including its SAKURA-X chiplet. This investment builds on EdgeCortix's success in prior funding rounds, showing investor belief in its specialized AI hardware. EdgeCortix's SAKURA chip can deliver 60 TOPS of performance while using less than 10 watts of power.

Synergy for Telecom and Infrastructure Growth

The investment aims to create strong partnerships. Axiro Semiconductor, which designs RF, mmWave, and advanced connectivity chips, finds its low-power, high-performance AI expertise matches EdgeCortix's capabilities. According to Axiro CEO Dr. Naveen Yanduru, this investment supports their advanced connectivity efforts and will boost Axiro's standing in worldwide telecom and wireless infrastructure markets. This collaboration places both companies to meet the growing need for AI in infrastructure, industrial systems, robotics, and telecom. MPower Partners, a venture capital fund focused on deep-tech and ESG-aligned companies, brings a global view to the investment.

Edge AI Market Sees Growing Demand

The deal highlights the increasing demand for specialized AI hardware, especially for edge devices where saving power is key. The edge AI market is growing fast because businesses need faster, real-time processing. Gartner predicts that by 2028, about a third of enterprise software will use agentic AI. EdgeCortix operates in a competitive market against companies like NVIDIA (with its Jetson AGX Orin), Axelera Metis, and SiMa.ai, which also offer AI chips for edge devices. It also faces competition from larger AI development platforms. EdgeCortix stands out by focusing on energy efficiency and unique AI designs, such as its Dynamic Neural Accelerator®.

CG Power's Strategic Position

For CG Power, this investment aligns with its strategy to tap into future growth areas. The company holds a significant market valuation, reflecting strong market expectations for its expansion. CG Power operates diverse businesses including Industrial Systems and Power Systems, building on an 87-year history. While analysts generally recommend buying CG Power stock, some note that its valuation may appear high. The company faces the inherent risks of the capital-intensive semiconductor industry, including rapid technological changes and intense competition. Additionally, CG Power is managing a past tax demand, for which a stay order has been granted pending appeal.
