Ambition for Full Reusability
Bengaluru's Ethereal Exploration Guild announced Tuesday it has secured $5 million in Series A funding from TDK Ventures. This capital will fuel the development of what the company claims will be the world's first fully reusable medium-lift launch vehicle. The venture aims to significantly reduce the cost of delivering payloads into orbit.
Cutting Orbital Costs
The startup is developing the Razor Crest Mk-1 launch vehicle, targeting orbital launch costs between $500 and $1,000 per kilogram. Such price points are considered essential for the commercial viability of future space applications. Ethereal's distinctive approach involves full reusability for both the booster and the upper stage, a technically demanding strategy necessary for achieving ultra-low costs and maintaining a high launch frequency.
Technical Innovations
Its reusable upper stage utilizes an in-house engine powered by a proprietary Full Flow Segregated Cooling Cycle (FFSCC). The company has also developed its own simulation tools and test infrastructure to accelerate development timelines. The founders, including co-founder and CEO Manu J. Nair, possess prior experience from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Manastu Space, and international aerospace research programs.
Strategic Investor Expertise
"Securing backing from a strategic partner like TDK Ventures validates our long-term vision," stated Manu J. Nair. TDK Ventures' expertise in sensing, power delivery, and high-reliability electronic systems is expected to support rapid development and validation milestones for the Razor Crest Mk-1. Beyond capital, Ethereal gains access to TDK Corporation's advanced component technologies critical for avionics and guidance systems operating in harsh launch environments.
Market Opportunity
The global space economy is projected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2035. The medium-lift launch segment, capable of carrying payloads between 2,000 kg and 50,000 kg, is anticipated to dominate launch demand. Industry analysts estimate the total addressable market for these vehicles could exceed $17 billion by 2030, driven by satellite broadband, earth observation, and defense missions. Ethereal's funding will accelerate engine testing, vehicle integration, and early demonstration missions, positioning India in the competitive global reusable launch market.
