Samsung Electronics has raised prices for certain memory chips by up to 60% this month, driven by surging demand for AI data centers and a global supply shortage. These price hikes for server memory chips are expected to increase costs for major tech companies building data infrastructure and could also lead to higher prices for consumer products like smartphones and computers.

Samsung Electronics has significantly increased prices for select memory chips, with hikes reaching as much as 60% compared to September prices. This surge is primarily fueled by the intense global demand for components needed to build Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers, which have created a severe shortage of these essential chips. The South Korean tech giant delayed formal pricing announcements for October supply contracts, opting for substantial increases.
These soaring prices for memory chips, mainly used in servers, are placing additional financial pressure on large corporations involved in data infrastructure development. Furthermore, the cost increases threaten to push up the prices of other electronic devices that rely on these chips, such as smartphones and computers. Industry experts note that many leading server manufacturers and data center builders are now resigned to receiving insufficient product quantities, paying extreme premiums. For instance, contract prices for 32GB DDR5 memory chip modules jumped to $239 in November from $149 in September. Similar price increases, ranging from over 30% to 50%, have been observed for other DDR5 modules.
