This monumental achievement propels India ahead of established global players such as the United Kingdom, which has electrified 39 per cent of its network, Russia at 52 per cent, and China at 82 per cent. The Ministry of Railways announced this milestone, emphasizing its significance in bringing the nation closer to a fully electrified railway system.

Nationwide Electrification Progress

This extensive electrification means that the vast majority of India's rail traffic now runs on clean electric power, drastically reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Fourteen distinct railway zones, including major hubs like Central Railways, Eastern Railways, and Northern Railways, have successfully attained 100 per cent electrification. Furthermore, this progress is spread across 25 states and union territories, reflecting a truly nationwide transformation.

Accelerated Pace of Development

The electrification drive has demonstrated an unprecedented pace in recent years. Data submitted to the Lok Sabha revealed that 46,900 route kilometres have been electrified between 2014 and 2025. This figure is more than double the total electrification achieved in the sixty years prior to 2014. The momentum continues with 7,188 route kilometres electrified in the fiscal year 2023-24 and an additional 2,701 route kilometres in 2024-25, showcasing sustained commitment and efficient execution.

Environmental and Sustainability Gains

The environmental implications of this achievement are profound. Rail transport is inherently more carbon-efficient than road transport, emitting approximately 89 per cent less carbon dioxide (CO2) per tonne kilometre. Specifically, transporting one tonne of goods over one kilometre by rail produces about 11.5 grams of CO2, compared to 101 grams by road. This significant reduction in emissions directly contributes to India's broader sustainability agenda and its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Renewable Energy Integration

Complementing the electrification, Indian Railways is also a significant player in renewable energy generation. The network has commissioned 898 megawatts (MW) of solar power capacity across 2,626 stations. This integration of solar energy further enhances the environmental credentials of the railway system, tapping into clean power sources for its operations. All new railway line and multi-tracking projects are now being mandated with electrification from the project's inception, ensuring future growth aligns with green objectives.
