Hilton is making a significant move to expand its presence across India, with ambitious plans to double its luxury hotel footprint by the year 2030. This strategic push aims to solidify Hilton's position as a dominant player in the country's burgeoning luxury hospitality market. The company also intends to grow its overall hotel portfolio substantially, targeting a total of 300 hotels nationwide.

Doubling the Luxury Footprint

Zubin Saxena, Senior Vice President and Regional Head for South Asia at Hilton, stated that the company is set to "double the number of luxury hotels" and "dominate the luxury segment." This ambitious growth is underpinned by recent major signings, including the highly anticipated Waldorf Astoria Jaipur, slated for a 2027 opening.

Key New Luxury Hotels Announced

Further bolstering its luxury offering, Hilton has signed agreements for a dual complex featuring Waldorf Astoria and Hilton Hotels & Resorts at the Delhi International Airport, a project developed in conjunction with the GMR Group-led Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). Additionally, the pipeline includes Signia by Hilton Jaipur and LXR Hotels & Resorts in Bengaluru. These additions underscore Hilton's commitment to expanding its premium brands across key Indian metropolitan and tourist destinations.

Driving Force: Domestic Demand and Weddings

Saxena expressed strong confidence in India's capacity to absorb more luxury accommodations. He highlighted that the spending power of the Indian population has increased significantly, particularly in the post-pandemic era. He noted that approximately 85 percent of the Indian tourism and hospitality market is driven by domestic consumers, many of whom are well-traveled and accustomed to paying for high-end experiences abroad.

The lucrative Indian wedding market is also a key driver for this expansion. Saxena pointed out that the upcoming Waldorf Astoria in Jaipur is envisioned as a premier wedding destination. Similarly, the Conrad hotel in Jaipur is expected to benefit from the demand for luxury stays and high-profile weddings. The recently opened Hilton Hyderabad Genome Valley Resort and Spa experienced sold-out bookings for weddings in its very first month, validating this market potential.

Rapid Growth and Future Outlook

Looking ahead, Hilton plans to open between 8 to 10 new hotels in the next year, with a remarkable pace of one opening per month for the first half of the year. Saxena emphasized that nearly 90 percent of these new properties will be newly constructed, reflecting a focus on quality.

India is recognized as one of Hilton's fastest-growing global markets and a priority market for the company, with an overarching ambition to reach 300 hotels. By the end of the current year, Hilton expects to have 27 signings finalized, adding to its existing portfolio of approximately 32 hotels in the country.

Expanding Geographic Reach

Hilton's expansion strategy includes entering new markets, with its presence set to grow from 15 markets in 2024 to 25-30 new markets within the next five years. While upscale and luxury brands will focus on established hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Bengaluru, and Goa, mid-market brands are projected to grow faster in emerging cities such as Siliguri and Bhopal. This dual approach ensures broad market penetration and caters to diverse consumer needs across India.
