Impact Indian IPOs have seen significant reforms by Sebi over the last five years, making the process faster and more investor-friendly. However, this ease has inadvertently led investors to treat IPOs as a short-term 'lottery' for quick listing gains rather than focusing on underlying equity risks. Institutional investors have also found anchor allotments an easy way to deploy funds. This surge in demand has emboldened investment bankers and promoters to increase IPO valuations aggressively. Consequently, many recent IPOs are failing to deliver the expected listing-day gains, leaving habitual IPO investors facing losses instead of profits. The Lenskart IPO is cited as an example where stretched valuations and aggressive pricing led to significant investor frustration, despite the issue's eventual success. The key lesson is that companies must price their IPOs realistically, leaving room for post-listing growth, and provide adequate transparency regarding their valuations. Investment bankers are urged to offer more responsible advice rather than prioritizing higher valuations solely to secure mandates. This shift towards a more mature and fair IPO ecosystem is crucial for long-term market health. Rating: 7/10
