Sensex, Nifty Gain as FMCG Rallies; TCS Drops 2.76%

Indian markets rose on Wednesday, with the Sensex and Nifty gaining 0.45% and 0.43%, respectively, led by FMCG and PSU banks. However, IT stocks faced pressure, and TCS shares dropped 2.76% as investor caution grew ahead of a critical Tata Sons board meeting scheduled for September 17.

Indian stock markets ended higher on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, as buying returned to the consumer goods and public sector banking segments. The BSE Sensex closed at 74,336.45, up 0.45%, while the Nifty 50 finished at 23,217.60, a gain of 0.43%. While the broader market sentiment improved, the technology sector remained a significant drag, with specific volatility noted in Tata group stocks.

FMCG and PSU banks acted as the main drivers for the recovery. The Nifty FMCG index saw a rebound, with major names like ITC and Hindustan Unilever recording gains. This sector has struggled significantly over the past year, and traders viewed this session's move as a partial recovery from the sustained underperformance of the preceding 12 months.

In contrast, technology stocks struggled, pulling the Nifty IT index lower. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was among the weakest performers in the segment, falling 2.76% during the session. This drop occurred against a backdrop of long-term weakness in the IT sector, which has faced global macroeconomic pressure throughout the year.

Beyond general sector-specific trends, TCS shares were in focus due to company-specific developments. Investors are closely watching a crucial Tata Sons board meeting scheduled for September 17, 2026. This meeting is expected to address several high-stakes issues, including leadership succession. Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has stated he will not seek a third term when his current tenure concludes in February 2027, creating a period of transition uncertainty.

Furthermore, the company is managing regulatory developments regarding its structure. The Reserve Bank of India recently rejected Tata Sons’ request to surrender its registration as a core investment company. This regulatory stance has created uncertainty regarding the group's compliance path, including potential implications for a stock market listing, and has added to the volatility surrounding Tata group stocks.

The combination of sector-wide IT weakness and these specific governance and regulatory concerns contributed to the selling pressure on TCS shares. Moving forward, the outcome of the September 17 board meeting and subsequent management commentary will be the key monitorable for investors. The market will look for clarity on the leadership transition timeline and the group's strategy to address the regulator's concerns regarding its corporate structure.
