Nifty, Bank Nifty Face Consolidation Before F&O Expiry

The Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty indices are heading for a range-bound phase as the market approaches the monthly futures and options (F&O) expiry. Investors are tracking geopolitical developments and global oil prices to gauge the next trend. A sustained close above 24,000 for Nifty is now a critical level to monitor for further gains.

Detailed Coverage

The Indian stock market is entering a period of consolidation as traders prepare for the monthly futures and options (F&O) expiry. After the Nifty 50 recorded a gain of 228 points to close at 23,996 on July 27, the index now faces the challenge of maintaining momentum. Market breadth remained positive during the previous session, with over 2,000 stocks advancing on the National Stock Exchange.

Nifty 50 Performance and Key Levels

For the Nifty 50, market experts emphasize the importance of the 24,000 psychological level. A firm and sustained close above this point is considered necessary to potentially push the index toward the 24,200–24,300 range. On the downside, the index has established immediate support near 23,800. Data analysis from recent sessions highlights that significant put writing at lower levels and an improved put-call ratio above 1.15 indicate a base is forming around the 23,500 zone. While the India VIX remains below 15, providing some stability, investors continue to monitor crude oil prices and West Asian geopolitical developments, as these external factors remain influential in shaping short-term market sentiment.

Bank Nifty and Sector Trends

The Bank Nifty has shown resilience by rebounding above the 57,000 mark, even after a period of underperformance relative to the broader market. This recent lag has been attributed to mixed quarterly earnings from private banks and ongoing geopolitical concerns. The index currently faces a technical resistance zone between 58,500 and 59,000. Analysts suggest that the 56,000 level serves as a vital short-term support area. For investors, the immediate monitorable is whether the index can decisively breach its 20-day moving average, which currently acts as a near-term hurdle. If the index fails to break through the upper resistance, it may continue to trade within the established 56,000 to 59,000 range.

As the expiry approaches, the focus for market participants will remain on the interplay between technical support levels and incoming macro updates. Given the current environment, investors may track whether the indices can maintain their support zones or if external global pressures lead to increased volatility in the days leading up to the settlement date.
