Nifty 50 Faces 22,600 Rebound Test After 8-Week Slide

The Nifty 50 is testing a critical support zone at 22,421 after a record eight-week losing streak. While technical indicators suggest the index is oversold, market sentiment remains fragile due to high crude prices and rising US bond yields. Investors are now shifting focus to the Reserve Bank of India’s policy meeting scheduled for October 5-7 to gauge potential stability.

The Indian stock market has entered a period of extreme caution as the Nifty 50 navigates an unprecedented eight-week losing streak. Closing at 22,421.95 on October 1, the index is currently testing a critical technical floor. The immediate challenge for the market is to reclaim the 22,600–22,800 resistance range, a level where previous selling pressure has historically been intense.

RSI and the Technical Floor

The market is currently showing signs of technical exhaustion. The Relative Strength Index (RSI), which helps measure whether an index has been sold off too heavily, currently stands at 22.57. In technical terms, an RSI level below 30 is considered "oversold," which historically can precede a short-term bounce as selling pressure temporarily fades. Traders are closely watching the 200-week exponential moving average, which sits near the 22,378–22,400 level. If the index fails to defend this support zone and drops below 22,200, it could invite further selling, potentially exposing the index to the 22,000 level.

Macro Pressure Points

This technical setup is being challenged by significant external pressures. Global headwinds, particularly crude oil prices remaining above $100 per barrel, are raising concerns about corporate profit margins and domestic inflation. Simultaneously, rising US Treasury yields are prompting foreign investors to reduce their exposure to emerging markets like India, which has been a primary driver of the recent selling trend. While banking heavyweights have shown relative resilience compared to the broader index, the general sentiment remains fragile until these macroeconomic headwinds show signs of easing.

The RBI Policy Catalyst

Investors are now looking past the technical charts toward the upcoming Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee meeting, scheduled from October 5 to October 7. The central bank’s commentary on inflation, liquidity, and the interest rate trajectory will be the most significant monitorable for market direction this week. The market will be analyzing whether the RBI can provide any signals to stabilize sentiment or address the liquidity constraints currently affecting the financial system. Until there is more clarity from this policy decision, trading is likely to remain volatile, with many market participants preferring to wait for a confirmed trend rather than betting on an immediate reversal.
