Citigroup analysts have updated their Nifty 50 target to 26,800 for June 2027, citing strong first-quarter corporate earnings. The firm is bullish on financials, telecom, and healthcare, while remaining cautious on IT services and consumer staples. While earnings remain resilient, the brokerage highlighted margin pressures and crude oil volatility as key risks to monitor.
Citigroup has updated its outlook on Indian equities, setting a new Nifty 50 index target of 26,800 for June 2027. This replaces their previous projection of 26,000 for March 2027. The brokerage attributes this optimism to strong corporate performance in the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, where companies in the BSE 100 index outperformed expectations.
Earnings and Market Performance
Recent financial data showed a 6% growth in operating profits, known as EBITDA, and a 9% rise in net profits compared to the same period last year. Excluding the energy sector, top-line growth was even higher at 14%. This suggests that despite the challenging economic climate, many major companies are maintaining solid growth, which has encouraged the brokerage to remain positive on the market trajectory.
Sector Strategy and Top Picks
Citi has outlined a clear strategy for investors, focusing on sectors they believe will outperform the broader market. Financials, telecommunications, healthcare, and utilities are their preferred sectors where they have an overweight stance. Conversely, the firm remains cautious, or underweight, on IT services, consumer staples, and metals. As part of this sectoral reshuffle, the firm has also added Axis Bank to its list of top large-cap stock picks.
Key Risks to Consider
While the outlook is positive, the report flags several risks that could dampen performance. Margin pressure is visible across the consumer, industrial, and financial sectors. Additionally, rising crude oil prices and the ongoing shift toward artificial intelligence integration remain concerns that could impact productivity and costs. These factors, alongside potential challenges as the effects of recent tax benefits fade, suggest that market volatility could persist.
Investors may want to track how earnings growth holds up in the coming quarters and whether margin pressure continues to affect profitability. The brokerage's reliance on credit growth and wage hikes as catalysts means that any slowdown in these areas could lead to a shift in market sentiment.
