Aurobindo Pharma Targets $2 Billion US Revenue Amid Strategy Shift

Aurobindo Pharma is aiming for $2 billion in annual US revenue by expanding its portfolio through acquisitions like Lannett and A1 Biochem. The company is pivoting toward complex generics and biologics to support profit margins. Investors are now awaiting the upcoming Q2/H1 FY2027 financial results following the recent closure of the company's trading window.

Aurobindo Pharma is currently executing a multi-pronged growth strategy focused on reaching a $2 billion revenue target in the US market. After experiencing a decline in revenue during the previous fiscal year due to the loss of exclusivity for the drug gRevlimid, the company is reorienting its operations. This effort involves moving away from basic generic medicines toward a portfolio of complex generics, controlled substances, and biologics.

Expanding Through Acquisitions

The company’s strategy for the US involves both organic growth and recent acquisitions. The integration of Lannett, acquired for $250 million, is a central piece of this plan. The Lannett deal provided Aurobindo with significant manufacturing capacity in Indiana, which is being used to participate in government-mandated controlled substance tenders. Furthermore, the company recently completed the acquisition of A1 Biochem Labs LLC for $15.247 million to bolster its technical capabilities. Managing the successful integration of these new assets while maintaining operational efficiency remains a key focus for the management team.

Pivoting to Biologics

Aurobindo is also placing long-term bets on the biologics and biosimilars segment. The company has invested significant capital since 2018 and has secured a partnership with Merck as a core contract manufacturing anchor. This project aims to establish 1,20,000 litres of bioreactor capacity by 2030, with expectations that these operations could contribute $150-200 million annually by FY31. This long-term expansion is designed to create a differentiated product offering that faces less pricing competition than standard generic drugs.

Financial Context and Risks

Despite the investments, Aurobindo maintains a strong balance sheet with a net cash position. The company has reaffirmed its guidance for FY27, targeting double-digit revenue growth and EBITDA margins above 21 percent. The backward integration of its Penicillin-G facility under the PLI scheme has also helped in self-reliance for key raw materials, providing a buffer against external cost fluctuations.

However, investors should be aware of specific business risks. The US generic market is highly competitive, and the company remains exposed to pricing pressure, which can impact profitability. There is also the risk associated with executing large-scale acquisitions and the ramp-up time required for new specialized facilities. Foreign exchange volatility and shifting regulatory standards in the US market also remain factors that could influence performance.

As of October 1, 2026, Aurobindo Pharma has closed its trading window for designated persons, ahead of the declaration of its Q2 and H1 FY2027 financial results. The management's commentary in the upcoming quarterly report regarding the progress of its US expansion and the integration of the newly acquired assets will be the next key update for shareholders.
