Snorkel AI Valuation Hits $3.5 Billion in Series E

AI startup Snorkel AI has raised $350 million, tripling its valuation to $3.5 billion. The company provides synthetic data for training AI models, moving away from traditional manual data labeling.

Snorkel AI, a startup focused on artificial intelligence infrastructure, has reached a valuation of $3.5 billion following a $350 million Series E funding round. This latest capital infusion marks a sharp rise from the $1.3 billion valuation assigned to the company 17 months ago, reflecting the intense demand for high-quality data in the AI development sector.

Moving Beyond Manual Labeling

Founded in 2019, Snorkel AI originally started as a tool for automated data labeling. However, the company has pivoted toward a data-as-a-service model. Instead of relying on large groups of humans to tag data for AI models—a slow and expensive process—Snorkel AI uses software to generate synthetic data and simulated environments. This approach allows AI labs to train their models using machine-generated information, which proponents argue is faster and more scalable than human-led annotation.

The company currently reports an annualized revenue run-rate of $375 million, which it states is an 18-fold increase over the past year. By treating the costs of domain specialists differently than some of its competitors—who often group these payments into their primary revenue metrics—Snorkel AI aims to emphasize the software-driven nature of its business. This distinction is significant for investors, as it attempts to show that its growth is tied to scalable software rather than just manual labor.

Investment Context and Risks

The tripling of the company’s valuation in less than two years highlights the massive capital influx into the AI infrastructure sector. While this growth suggests strong demand for tools that make AI development more efficient, investors should remain cautious about the sustainability of such high valuations. The artificial intelligence sector is currently experiencing a period of heavy spending, and much of the future growth for companies like Snorkel AI depends on continued, large-scale investment from big tech firms and AI labs. If this spending cycle slows down or if AI models evolve to generate their own training data more efficiently, it could create pressure on the business model.

Furthermore, while the synthetic data market is expanding, it remains competitive. The company’s ability to defend its market position will depend on whether its software can consistently outperform other methods of data preparation, including those developed by the AI labs themselves. Investors watching this space will likely focus on whether the company can maintain its rapid revenue growth while managing the capital costs associated with scaling its infrastructure.
