Premji Family Office Leads ₹1,000 Cr Vegafin Funding

Vegafin Capital has secured ₹1,000 crore in a funding round led by Premji Family Office, with participation from Norwest and Lok Capital. The capital will support the company’s AI-focused MSME lending platform and the acquisition of fintech firm Bizloan. This investment underscores the growing appetite of major family offices for tech-enabled financial services, aiming to improve credit access for small businesses through digital underwriting.

Vegafin Capital, a fintech startup focused on MSME lending, has successfully closed a ₹1,000 crore funding round led by the Premji Family Office. The capital infusion also saw participation from institutional investors including Norwest and Lok Capital, marking a significant step in the company's efforts to integrate advanced artificial intelligence into India's micro, small, and medium enterprise lending space.

The funding package is tied to the strategic acquisition of Bizloan, a Gurugram-based fintech firm. Through this deal, Vegafin acquires an operational infrastructure that includes over 35 branches and an existing loan book valued at $25 million. This consolidation provides the company with immediate physical reach that can be modernized with its proprietary AI platform, shifting away from manual, legacy underwriting processes to a more data-driven, scalable model.

The venture is headed by Bijith Bhaskar, a former partner at Premji Invest who spent two decades at ICICI Bank in various senior roles. His background in digital banking is central to the firm’s strategy of leveraging AI to improve credit risk assessment in the MSME sector, which has historically faced challenges regarding access to institutional credit due to limited formal documentation.

For the Premji Family Office, this investment aligns with an ongoing expansion of its portfolio, which manages roughly $15 billion. The office has been steadily increasing its exposure to domestic financial services and technology-led ventures. The firm already holds stakes in major entities such as the National Stock Exchange of India and the digital lender KreditBee. This recent backing of Vegafin demonstrates a shift in strategy among Indian investors who are increasingly comfortable supporting the deployment of AI in core financial services to address structural gaps in the domestic economy.

Investors may monitor the integration of Bizloan’s legacy operations into the new AI-centric framework, as scaling digital platforms requires careful execution. The MSME lending space remains highly competitive, with several fintech and traditional players vying for market share. Ultimately, the success of the investment will hinge on the company's ability to maintain high underwriting standards while effectively scaling its loan book through its new technology stack.
