He announced that ₹10,000 crore from the Startup Fund of Funds will target deep-tech innovation. This initiative marks a decade of Startup India, fostering enterprise across all cities and empowering youth and women, reflecting consistency, inclusivity, and growth in the nation's entrepreneurial landscape.

India's Startup Ecosystem Faces Challenges, Gains Government Support

Building a startup in India is far from a simple endeavor, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated Friday. Speaking at the ‘Startup Pe Charcha’ event in New Delhi, Goyal engaged with prominent entrepreneurs, acknowledging the demanding nature of the entrepreneurial journey.

The minister shared the stage with leaders including Ritesh Agarwal, Founder and CEO of OYO Rooms; Aman Gupta, Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of boAt; and Mohit Yadav, Co-founder of Minimalist. Agarwal reflected on India's significant economic transformation over the past decade, noting substantial GDP growth. He highlighted a trend of top-tier talent, including graduates from institutions like Harvard and Stanford, choosing to return to India to launch their ventures. Agarwal also voiced support for aspiring entrepreneurs from smaller towns.

Deep-Tech Focus with New Fund

Rajan Anandan, Managing Director at Peak XV Partners, queried the minister on India’s progress in the deep-tech sector. Goyal responded with enthusiasm for the advancements being made. He confirmed that a significant portion of the government's second ₹10,000 crore Startup Fund of Funds will be allocated to support deep-tech startups.

The ‘Startup Pe Charcha’ event served as a platform for policymakers and entrepreneurs to assess a decade of the Startup India initiative. Discussions centered on the future trajectory of India's startup ecosystem. Goyal had previously lauded Startup India as a "pathbreaking initiative" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, enabling the country to "dream big and act bigger."

Inclusivity and Growth

Goyal emphasized that the program's success extends beyond quantitative metrics, highlighting its broad social impact. He noted the initiative's role in unlocking the spirit of enterprise in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, while empowering young individuals and women. Commemorating National Startup Day, the minister characterized the ten-year journey of Startup India as one of "consistency, inclusivity and growth," pointing toward a robust future for the sector. The current pace sees over 50 startups being recognized daily across the nation.
