NITI Aayog has launched a six-month study to help India’s deep-tech startups move from laboratory prototypes to industrial-scale production. The initiative aims to address critical gaps in patient capital, testing infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks. NITI Aayog has officially initiated a comprehensive study to identify strategies for transitioning India’s deep-tech startups from the laboratory phase to commercial, industrial-scale production. The government think tank is seeking experts to map out the current roadblocks within the ecosystem, with plans to finalize the findings within six months. These firms often operate on a completely different financial timeline. While a mobile app might scale revenue quickly, a deep-tech company typically faces a prolonged research and development phase before it can even launch a prototype.

This creates a specific financial hurdle: the need for 'patient capital.' This term refers to funding from investors who are willing to wait for long-term growth without demanding immediate quarterly profits. Many domestic startups in this space currently struggle to secure this type of funding, which often causes promising ventures to stagnate at the early stages. The government’s study aims to address this by identifying how to bridge the gap between initial research and final market entry.

Structural Gaps and Infrastructure Challenges

Beyond funding, the study will focus on infrastructure. Developing high-end hardware often requires access to expensive pilot testing facilities and specialized data sets, which are difficult for individual startups to build on their own.
