The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has officially launched 'MC²+ Ignite,' a specialized accelerator program designed to foster deep-tech innovation within the Indian energy sector. Introduced on August 19, 2026, at the IIT Madras campus, the initiative is structured as a non-profit effort led by the MC² Foundation to bridge the gap between academic research, emerging startups, and established energy public sector undertakings (PSUs).
The primary motivation behind this program is to improve the efficiency of research and development. In the energy sector, multiple large companies often conduct similar research projects simultaneously, which can lead to wasted capital and fragmented efforts. By creating a centralized yet decentralized accelerator, the ministry aims to streamline these efforts. The program will feature a central hub in Delhi and decentralized nodes located within the R&D centers of participating energy majors, allowing startups to test their technologies in real-world environments.
For selected startups, the program provides a financial structure that includes up to ₹50 lakh in convertible funding and up to ₹1.5 crore in milestone-linked funding. The target areas for this initiative cover a broad range of modern energy challenges, including AI-led subsurface intelligence, advanced drilling technologies, green hydrogen, bioenergy, and digital asset management. Applications for the initial cohort remain open until August 31, 2026.
While this is a government-led innovation initiative and not a publicly traded company, the development is relevant to investors in the energy space.
