Sensex Surges 1,534 Points Led by Reliance; Yes Bank Falls 14%

Sensex jumped 1,534 points on Thursday, led by gains in Reliance Industries and private banking heavyweights. While large-cap indices rallied, midcap and smallcap stocks faced selling pressure. Yes Bank shares dropped 14% after a Supreme Court order involving its AT-1 bonds, reflecting ongoing volatility in specific financial segments.

Indian benchmark indices staged a sharp recovery on Thursday, with the Sensex climbing 1,533.72 points to close at 74,315.61. The Nifty50 index followed a similar trajectory, gaining 374.65 points to settle at 22,997.35. The rally was primarily driven by heavyweight stocks, particularly Reliance Industries, as market participants reacted to reports regarding a potential public offering for its Jio Platforms subsidiary. This surge in large-cap stocks helped the headline indices reclaim the 20-day moving average, though they continue to trade below their 50-day and 200-day averages, a level often watched by traders for signs of a structural trend change.

Market Divergence Between Large and Small Caps

While the headline indices showed strength, the broader market failed to mirror this optimism. The Nifty Midcap index declined by 0.5%, and the Nifty Smallcap index faced a steeper drop of 1.3%. This divergence suggests that investors are currently prioritizing the stability of large-cap companies over smaller ones. Performance was concentrated in sectors like IT, auto, and private banking, which saw gains between 1% and 1.8%. Conversely, segments such as PSU banks and media stocks struggled, signaling a cautious approach toward smaller entities.

Impact of Corporate Developments

Stock-specific volatility remained high, with news-driven events significantly impacting individual share prices. Yes Bank shares plummeted 14% following a Supreme Court order that blocked the write-off of the bank's Additional Tier-1 (AT-1) bonds. These bonds are debt instruments that function as part of a bank's capital, and this legal development has created uncertainty regarding the bank's financial structure. Similarly, IDBI Bank saw an 8% decline amid reports concerning a potential stake sale to Fairfax Financial Holdings. In contrast, ICICI Bank performed strongly, rising 3.8% and serving as a key contributor to the Nifty's gains. Other companies, including Nestle India and Bajaj Consumer Care, faced selling pressure throughout the session.

Macro and Technical Context

The Indian rupee strengthened against the U.S. dollar, closing at 95.05. While a stronger rupee can be a positive for domestic markets, it remains a factor for exporters. From a technical perspective, the current market movement is being viewed by analysts as a relief rally. The Nifty50 faces immediate resistance in the 23,100 to 23,200 range. For investors, the sustainability of this rally will be a critical monitorable, especially given the underperformance of the broader market. Market observers will likely focus on whether the indices can maintain momentum and surpass their 50-day moving averages in the coming sessions to confirm a more durable reversal.
