Sachin Pilot Demands Resignation of CEC Over Electoral Roll Row

Congress leader Sachin Pilot has called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing alleged electoral irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision of rolls. As the INDIA bloc seeks judicial intervention in the Supreme Court, the party continues to reject calls for an election boycott while escalating public protests.

Congress General Secretary Sachin Pilot has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, citing significant concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process. The demand follows allegations by the opposition that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has led to the selective removal of approximately 13 crore names, which Pilot has characterized as a systemic effort to compromise the electoral landscape.

The current controversy centers on the perceived lack of institutional independence within the Election Commission of India. The opposition has raised concerns regarding recent legislative changes to the appointment process for election commissioners. Under the previous framework, the selection committee included the Chief Justice of India, but the current process replaces this judicial representative with a Union Cabinet minister, effectively providing the government with a majority in the selection of commissioners.

In response to these developments, the INDIA bloc has filed a formal petition in the Supreme Court to challenge the alleged irregularities in voter registration and electoral roll management. Alongside this legal strategy, the opposition has organized public demonstrations, including a 'March for Democracy,' to voice their grievances. Despite the heightened tensions, Pilot has clarified that the party is not currently considering an election boycott, viewing such a step as premature. Instead, the focus remains on leveraging judicial oversight and public advocacy to demand transparency.

The situation remains dynamic, with institutional trust and electoral fairness at the heart of the debate. Key monitorables for the public and observers include upcoming proceedings in the Supreme Court, any further official response from the Election Commission regarding the electoral roll revision, and the potential impact of these ongoing political tensions on the broader electoral process.
