SEBI Changes Market Hours: New Closing Auction From Aug 3

Starting Monday, August 3, 2026, Indian stock exchanges will implement a new Closing Auction Session for F&O-eligible stocks. This update extends F&O trading hours to 3:40 pm and introduces a structured auction to determine official closing prices. The move aims to improve price discovery and align domestic trading mechanisms with global standards.

Starting Monday, August 3, 2026, Indian stock exchanges will roll out significant changes to daily trading hours following a new framework from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). These updates are designed to refine how closing prices are determined and to extend the time available for derivatives traders to manage their positions.

Closing Auction Session for F&O Stocks

A primary update is the introduction of a Closing Auction Session (CAS) for stocks that are eligible for the Futures and Options (F&O) segment, often referred to as Category I stocks. Under the previous structure, closing prices were determined by the weighted average price of trades in the final 30 minutes of the session. The new system replaces this with a dedicated auction mechanism, intended to improve price accuracy by aggregating buy and sell orders at the end of the day.

For these F&O-eligible stocks, the regular trading session will now wrap up at 3:15 pm. Following a brief transition period, the auction process will begin at 3:20 pm. The process consists of two order entry phases: the first from 3:20 pm to 3:25 pm, and the second from 3:25 pm to 3:30 pm. During the second phase, investors will not be permitted to cancel or modify existing market orders. Order matching will take place between 3:30 pm and 3:35 pm to determine the final official closing price.

Extended Derivatives Trading and Pre-Open Updates

Beyond the cash segment, the equity derivatives or F&O segment will see a 10-minute extension to its trading hours, with the session now closing at 3:40 pm. This extra time is intended to give traders more flexibility in managing positions near the market close. Meanwhile, trading hours for cash-segment stocks that are not eligible for F&O remain unchanged, with those markets closing at 3:30 pm as usual.

SEBI has also modified the pre-open session, which happens before the start of regular trading. The order entry window for the pre-open session is now set for 9:00 am to 9:07 am, with order matching occurring between 9:07 am and 9:15 am. The regular market session will continue to begin at 9:15 am.

These changes are part of a broader push to align Indian market structures with global best practices. By using an auction-based closing price, regulators aim to reduce the impact of sudden, large trades on the official closing price and help passive funds, such as index ETFs, execute their end-of-day trades with lower tracking error. Investors should monitor how these new phases affect price volatility and liquidity in the final minutes of the trading day throughout the first few weeks of implementation.
