Reliance Profit Hits Record, Auto Sales Milestone in Nov

Indian markets are reacting to a mix of strong corporate earnings and record-breaking sales. Reliance Industries posted a record profit, while the auto industry crossed the 5 lakh unit sales milestone in October. Investors are balancing these growth indicators against risks like inventory management and sector-specific margin pressures.

Indian markets kicked off November with a flurry of activity, as investors reacted to record profits from Reliance Industries and a historic sales milestone in the automotive sector. This wave of corporate updates has drawn attention to companies balancing strong demand with the need to manage rising operational costs.

Reliance Industries reported a record consolidated profit of ₹29,550 crore for the second quarter of the 2027 financial year, a jump of 33.8% compared to the previous year. This growth was largely supported by a 67.9% surge in EBITDA for its oil-to-chemicals business. However, investors may want to monitor the retail division, where margins could come under pressure due to changes in the festive calendar and inflationary headwinds.

The automotive industry reached a significant landmark in October, with monthly industry-wide wholesale dispatches crossing the 5 lakh unit mark for the first time. Maruti Suzuki led the sector with its highest-ever monthly total sales of 2,76,120 units. Tata Motors also maintained steady momentum, reporting a 23% increase in passenger vehicle sales, with its electric vehicle sales rising by 75%. While the festive season demand has been strong, market observers are watching dealership inventory levels closely to see if current growth can be sustained against a high base.

Coal India posted a strong performance with a 57% year-on-year rise in net profit, reaching ₹6,547 crore for the second quarter. To reward shareholders, the company announced an interim dividend of ₹10.25 per share. The record date for this dividend payment is set for November 4, 2026. Despite these robust earnings, the stock has experienced recent volatility. Analysts have raised concerns regarding lower realizations from e-auctions, where coal is sold at market-linked prices, which can impact the company's overall revenue stability.

Looking ahead, market participants will likely monitor broader macroeconomic signals, especially following the net selling by foreign portfolio investors in October. The immediate focus for investors remains on upcoming company commentary regarding demand sustainability and whether corporate earnings growth can continue to anchor market sentiment amidst global macroeconomic uncertainty.
