The Rajasthan Commercial Tax Department has recovered ₹2.51 crore from businesses following a two-month audit of tax records and physical operations. The enforcement drive focuses on addressing fraudulent Input Tax Credit (ITC) claims and invoice discrepancies across major business hubs like Jaipur and Ajmer.
The Rajasthan Commercial Tax Department has intensified its enforcement efforts to reduce revenue leakage and improve tax compliance across the state. In a two-month initiative, authorities have audited multiple business locations, uncovering approximately ₹2.85 crore in tax irregularities. So far, the state has successfully recovered or secured the voluntary reversal of ₹2.51 crore from the entities involved.
Focus on ITC and Construction Claims
A major portion of the department's scrutiny has focused on the validity of Input Tax Credit (ITC) claims. ITC allows businesses to reduce their tax liability by claiming credit for the taxes paid on inputs used for business purposes. However, tax authorities have been strictly auditing claims made on construction activities, which are often subject to specific restrictions under GST laws.
In one instance, Stubborn Resorts Private Limited, based in Jaipur, faced scrutiny regarding ITC claimed for construction projects in the Jhotwara area. Following the tax department’s intervention, the firm reversed ITC amounting to ₹55.26 lakh. Similarly, AGRS Ventures LLP, located in Jaipur’s C-Scheme, was found to have claimed ineligible ITC related to immovable property development, leading to a reversal of approximately ₹99.76 lakh.
Audits of Trade Documentation
Beyond ITC verification, the department is actively checking if businesses are maintaining proper documentation for sales and inventory. The investigation teams, deployed in hubs like Jaipur, Ajmer, Beawar, and Phalodi, have looked for discrepancies between reported turnover and physical stock. For instance, Assam Timber and Plywood in Ajmer was investigated for allegedly selling stock without mandatory tax documentation. Physical verification at their site resulted in the seizure of records and an identified tax discrepancy of ₹8 lakh.
Additionally, K C Agencies in Ajmer was flagged for potential violations related to the composition scheme and the omission of mandatory bills of supply. The composition scheme is a simplified tax system for smaller businesses that imposes strict limits on invoicing and tax collection. Any deviation from these rules, such as failing to issue the correct tax documents, can lead to immediate audit action.
Why These Audits Matter
These enforcement actions are part of a broader, ongoing push by tax authorities across India to use data analytics to identify mismatches. By reconciling GSTR returns with physical verification, departments aim to close the gap between reported tax liability and actual economic activity. For businesses, the primary monitorable in this environment is the accuracy of their tax filings and the validity of any credits claimed. The fact that several firms opted to voluntarily reverse their ITC claims during the audit process suggests that tax authorities are focusing on ensuring that tax provisions are interpreted and applied strictly according to official guidelines. Further audits are expected to continue as the department seeks to improve the state's tax collection efficiency.
